Here’s something to read, on the topic of things to listen to.  This will be happening more frequently.  Rather than go into exhaustive tonal descriptions of the music, I’m just going to barely supplement the recommendation with what comes to mind.  If it’s on this page, I’m saying you should consider listening to it, for whatever that’s worth.

Memoryhouse: The Years EP

This is promising material.  I hope to hear more from them soon.  They’re Canadian and should be prepared for daily comparisons to Beach House.  It’s not a bad thing, and they really brought it on themselves.

Jonathan Richman: I, Jonathan

I’m really late getting around to Jonathan Richman, who’s been on the scene since the ’80s, when he fronted the Modern Lovers.  Dom recently let me borrow I, Jonathan, and I’m hooked.  You just need to hear it and you’ll get into it, okay?

Here We Go Magic: s/t and Pigeons

I’ve sort of known I liked this band for a while now, and just hadn’t done anything about it.  This weekend I picked up both of their discs and they’re both very good.  They fit a lot of nice surprises into their music and obviously work very hard on it.  Kudos.  Oh, and Luke Temple is on their first album — Cape Ann shout out, Luke!

Real Estate: s/t

Hanna found this album somewhere and it’s awesome!  Chilled out, summer guitar rock — like Galaxie 500, I suppose.

Avi Buffalo: s/t

19-year-old kids in L.A. can do some pretty great things artistically (see: The Hills).  These ones made a good record and they don’t act like this makes them coolest people in the world (unlike too many other recent acts from that scene) so they’ve won my affection.  High five, gang.  Don’t do drugs.

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper: Samples for Handsome Animals

Portland, Maine’s finest!  I had heard of them but hadn’t heard their music until this weekend, after playing at the Factory Portland show at the Space.  T.J. (right) played a solo set and he was awesome.  Aly was in the house and may or may not have been standing right in front of Charlie and me when we were talking about her and her voice and T.J.’s voice (all positive things).  Now, I’ve been getting really into their recordings - check them out!

That’s all for now.
